The Carbon 1 MK II has become the world’s first smartphone to come with a carbon fiber monocoque, meaning that its external body provides structural rigidity without any internal support. Apart from the obvious benefits of coming with a carbon fiber body, the phone also features a 6.01-inch AMOLED display, 8GB of RAM, a dual-rear camera setup, and more.
The carbon fiber body has enabled the smartphone to become one of the thinnest (6.3mm) and lightest (125g) in the smartphone market today. The phone is already up for pre-order with the expected shipments to be delivered around late-March to early-April.
Carbon 1 MK II specifications and features
For the numerous wonderful properties of carbon fiber, there has always been one downside when it has been used in smartphones – it blocks the radio waves. This was one of the reasons why it was used sparingly in the past. However, the German brand spent years trying to work past this situation and have finally cracked it.
The key to getting a stunning carbon body smartphone with several amazing specs is the proprietary HyRECM technology (Hybrid Radio Enabled Composite Material). This took four years to develop and it combines high-quality carbon fibers with composite materials, allowing radio waves to easily pass through.
The Carbon 1 MK II features a 6.0-inch FHD+ AMOLED display with an 18:9 aspect ratio, a 1,080×2,160p resolution, and Corning Gorilla Glass Victus for added screen protection. The smartphone will be powered by the MediaTek Helio P90 chipset and be paired with 8GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 256GB of UFS 2.1 storage.
In terms of camera specs, there will be two 16MP sensors with f/2.0 aperture at the back and a 20MP sensor at the front for clicking stunning selfies. The connectivity options on this 4G dual SIM phone include Wi-Fi 5, Bluetooth v5.0 with AptX HD, USB Type-C 3.1 port, GPS, and more. Unfortunately, there is no option for a 3.5mm headphone jack but there is NFC to take care of that aspect.
While the smartphone will come with Android 10 OS out of the box but Android 11 update is expected to come out in the second quarter of 2021.
