Amazon to start manufacturing of Fire TV Sticks in India

  • As of now, Amazon would start the production via Foxconn, and then it will commence its own manufacturing.
  • Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos wants to create 1 million jobs in India by the end of 2025.

To help carry the scheme of ‘AatmanirbhaarBharat’ to the next level, the e-commerce giant Amazon has now announced plans to start manufacturing electronic devices in India by the end of 2021. It is going to be the firm’s first manufacturing in the world including the production of Fire TV sticks. 

Amazon on its official blog post has proclaimed that it will set-up the manufacturing plant in Chennai in association with Foxconn’s subsidiary Cloud Network Technology during the second half. 

The factory in Chennai is speculated to be operational during the Q2 of this year. As of now, the e-commerce company was sourcing its Fire TV Stick from Taiwan and China for the Indian market. Now, it intends to manufacture lakhs of this device each year and will expand the industrial unit depending on the demand from the consumer.

The news was made public after a virtual meeting between Union minister for communications and IT Ravi Shankar Prasad and Amazon’s global vice-president and country head for India Amit Agarwal.

Commenting on the announcement, Ravi Shankar Prasad, Union minister for electronics and information technology and communications, said: “India is an attractive investment destination and is poised to become a major player in the global supply chain in the electronics and IT products industry…We welcome Amazon’s decision to set up a manufacturing line in Chennai, as it will enhance domestic production capacities, and create jobs as well.”

He also mentioned that this is just a beginning for the company to manufacture electronic goods from India for India and there are more announcements in the pipeline that will take the country’s economy to the next level.

Amazon’s global senior vice-president and country head for India Amit Agarwal, said: “We are delighted to announce Amazon’s first manufacturing line in India to produce hundreds of thousands of Fire TV Stick devices every year catering to the demands of the Indian customers. This further reiterates our commitment to the Government of India’s ‘Make in India’ initiative.”
