The smartphone industry is gradually shifting its focus to compact devices and the recent rumours of the Sony Xperia Compact only solidify this theory. With the arrival of compact flagships like the iPhone SE 2020, Pixel 4a, Galaxy S20 FE, and iPhone 12 Mini, it is clear that the big-name smartphone manufacturers are keen on releasing compact handsets. In 2020, another big player seems to be joining the queue of compact smartphones as Sony Xperia Compact is tipped to launch sometime in 2021.
There have been many reports on the Japanese tech giant looking to revive its compact smartphone lineup. In the past, Sony had launched a number of compact devices namely Xperia XZ1 (5.2-inches) in 2017, Xperia XA2 (5.2-inches) in 2017, and Xperia XZ2 Compact (5.0-inches) in 2018.
Steve Hemmerstoffer shares Sony Xperia Compact specs and renders
Popular tipster Steve Hemmerstoffer, also known as OnLeaks, revealed key specifications of the upcoming Xperia Compact handset via Voice. He claims that the smartphone is expected to measure 140×68.9×8.9mm and feature an 8MP front camera housed in a waterdrop-style notch.
It is likely going to compete with the iPhone 12 Mini, which is the latest compact smartphone (featuring a 5.4-inch display). However, the Sony Xperia Compact is expected to be priced relatively low in comparison to the iPhone Mini. He also revealed a few renders showcasing a boxy device with rounded corners. The device was seen to have a dedicated camera button as well as a capacitive fingerprint scanner integrated into the power button. Moreover, the top of the device had a 3.5mm audio jack and a small pic opening.
Hemmerstoffer mentioned a report by Japanese blog ‘AndroidNext’ from two months back that claimed Sony is looking to release a 5.5-inch Xperia Compact smartphone in the first half of 2021 and it could come with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 775 SoC. Moreover, the device could come in two variants – 6GB of RAM+128 GB of non-expandable storage with the other one being 8GB of RAM+256GB of non-expandable storage.
There is limited information on the Xperia Compact as of now as Sony hasn’t revealed any official specifications or launch date. More information is expected to surface online in the coming weeks.
