Tesla to make its grand entry in Indian market by 2021

Tesla, the United States-based electric vehicle and clean energy company, is all set to “start operations” in India by 2021, stated Nitin Gadkari, the union minister for road transport and highways and the minister of micro, small, and medium enterprises, on December 28.

“India is going to become the number one manufacturing hub for auto in five years,” said Gadkari, further explaining that the Indian companies have been trying to work on electrical vehicles that are affordable and as advanced as Tesla technically. Tesla will likely start operations first with sales and then consider assembly along with manufacturing depending on the response to the electric cars.

When a Twitter handle named Tesla Club India checked with Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, about the company’s progress in India, Musk had replied by saying, “Next year for sure” in his tweet in October 2020. A $1000 (INR 73,546) deposit was collected from interested Indian buyers back in 2016 and the year after that in 2017, Tesla had started taking bookings. Some of the interested buyers who had given the deposit reported that they felt rather very led down by Tesla. In another tweet, Musk had said, “Maybe I’m misinformed, but I was told that 30 percent of parts must be locally sourced and the supply doesn’t yet exist in India to support that” explaining the delay for foreign direct investment (FDI) norms.

According to recent reports, the first model to come to India will be the Tesla Model 3. This model will be affordable and the booking for it might likely start in the upcoming weeks while the sales will take palace in the second half of 2021. Tesla is likely to handle the sales directly similar to how it does in other countries. The cost of the completed built units that will be imported will start from INR 55,00,000.

The Tesla Model 3 will cost $35000( INR 25,74,045 approx) which will come in only one standard color, Black. If a customer wants a different color an additional cost of $1000 (INR 73,546) must be paid. Tesla will offer a wide range of colors like midnight silver metallic, deep blue metallic, silver metallic, pearl white Multi-Coat, and red Multi-Coat.
