Top smartphones launching in December 2020: Expectations

December 2020 still has some big new phones lined up for launch and most of them have 5G.

2020 has been a year that will remembered in history for more than just smartphone innovation. However, the perpetual cycle of product launches wasn’t thwarted even during these tumultuous times as we saw some great smartphones such as the OnePlus Nord, Mi 10, Galaxy A51, and many more. Regardless, there’s more to come as we head towards the end of the year and here’s what we can expect to see.

Nokia 7.3

Nokia has been mum for a long while now and it is almost time for the old Finnish smartphone maker to break its silence. Latest reports suggest that the HMD Global-owned phone maker will launch the phone some time in December and the Nokia 7.3 will be its high-end mid ranger.

In terms of specifications, not much is known, however, the Nokia 7.3 is very likely a  5G handset expected to run on the Snapdragon 690 chipset, with a 48MP quad-camera on the back.

Since the handset hasn’t launched anywhere yet, we can’t talk about how Nokia will price it but it should be one of the very few mid-range 5G phones in India running stock Android.

It should be noted that Nokia will also likely launch the Nokia 6.3 alongside the Nokia 7.3. According to leaksters, this is the same phone as the Nokia 7.3 sans 5G.

Samsung Galaxy A42

Now, the Galaxy A42 is a 5G handset that has already launched in regions outside of India. However, it is expected to arrive in India in December. Its key specifications include a Snapdragon 750 5G chipset, a 6.6-inch AMOLED display, and a 5,000mAh battery. In terms of cameras, it has a 48MP main sensor and an 8MP ultra-wide sensor and a couple of 5MP sensors while the front waterdrop notch houses a 20MP selfie camera.

With prices hovering around the 309 Euro region, it could very well cost around Rs 30,000 in India. This will be one of the more affordable 5G smartphones in India, however, it is kind of a moot point as 5G is nowhere to be found in India. Buyers would be better served with models such as the Galaxy M51 or Galaxy A51. Samsung has a very wide bouquet of offerings in almost every price segment, so we wouldn’t be surprised to see a couple more handsets launch alongside the Galaxy A42 such as the Galaxy M12 or Galaxy A52.

Oppo Reno 5

Being spotted on many certification portals such as TENAA, the Reno 5 5G series is a prime candidate to launch in the coming weeks. It will likely launch in China first and it is expected to come with different CPUs in different models. Some tipsters expect a Snapdragon 865 for the high-end model while the lower-end model is expected to get a Snapdragon 750 5G chipset. The series will also likely have 65W fast-charging. But apart from these specifications, not much about its hardware is known. The Reno 5 5G on TENAA had a 6.43-inch OLED display alongside a 64MP primary camera, 8MP ultrawide module and two 2MP cameras.

The Reno series in India typically is marketed as a stylish mid-range handset coming under Rs 35,000. We can expect the Reno 5 5G at least to be priced in the same region.

Realme 7 5G

Realme’s December launch is a tricky thing to predict. The smartphone maker has had so many launches outside of India, it is hard to say which device could come to India in December. It could be the Realme Q series, or the Realme 7 5G series, or even the Realme X7, all of which have good chances of landing in India.

The Realme 7 5G comes with MediaTek’s Dimensity 800U chipset and an IPS LCD display measuring 6.5-inches. It sports a 48MP main camera alongside an 8MP ultra-wide lens. It also has a couple of 2MP sensors and a 20MP front shooter for selfies. The handset is powered by a 5,000mAh battery with 30W fast-charging.

The Realme 7 5G will retail for 279 pounds which also translates to around Rs 28,000. Hence, we can expect it to be priced around the Rs 30,000 mark in India. At that kind of price, it will face stiff competition from the likes of the OnePlus Nord which has a lower Rs 24,999 price tag.

Vivo V20 Pro

Vivo is certain to complete its V series in India with the launch of the Vivo V20 Pro. It is expected to be one of the slimmest 5G phones in India. Now, this isn’t exactly a new phone as it has arrived on the global stage. It rocks a Snapdragon 765G chipset paired with a 64MP primary camera, an 8MP wide-angle lens, and a 2MP sensor. The front is supposed to be a combo of 44MP + 8MP sensors. It will boast a 6.44-inch Full-HD+ screen powered by a 4,000mAh battery and supports 33W flash charge.

As per leaks, the Vivo V20 Pro is again expected to be priced at Rs 29,990. This makes this one more device under the Rs 35,000 category. At this price, the Oppo Reno 4 Pro is a good handset with pretty good specifications all around. Moreover, one can even look at the handsets like the iQoo 3 which has a flagship Snapdragon 865 under the Rs 35,000 bracket.

Expected Price Rs 35,000

It seems that under Rs 30k will be hotly contested affair in December as there will be many new 5G offerings. Of course, there can always be surprises aside from what we’ve already mentioned here. However, India being far away from the adoption of 5G makes these handsets not very tempting to recommend in our eyes unless there are other features of these phones that allure you. Moreover, the presence of old flagship models such as the Redmi K20 Pro, OnePlus 7T, and even the iQoo 3 5G will make this a very interesting space to watch in India.
