Earlier in 2020, Sony announced that it’ll be launching its first 5G smartphones – Xperia Pro and Xperia 1 ii with both of these devices featuring the Snapdragon 865 processor. Along with the two 5G-enabled flagships, Sony also unveiled a mid-range smartphone in Xperia 10 ii that came with a not-so-appealing 665 SoC. Since then, the 5G technology has become quite popular and an increasing number of mid-range smartphones are being released with the 5G technology support. Now, Sony too has joined the race for mid-range 5G smartphones as it is set to launch the Xperia 10 iii in the coming months.
Sony Xperia 10 iii to feature 5G technology and Snapdragon 690 SoC
According to a new leak by code diver Nodar Sikharulidze, Sony Xperia 10 iii could be Sony’s first 5G mid-range phone as it is powered by the Snapdragon 690 chipset, a chipset that powers numerous mid-range smartphones launched in 2020.

The Snapdragon 690 5G is the key to mid-range 5G smartphones as it is the octa-core chipset that supports fifth-gen networks. It is also the first member of the SD6xx family to be 5G-enabled, which makes it sit slightly below the SD7xx members in terms of performance.
Given the surfacing, the code could be referring to the Sony Xperia 10 iii whereas the Snapdragon 875 could be used in the flagship Xperia 1 iii. Snapdragon 690 will make it easy for the device to connect to the sub-6 5G wave.
In terms of design, the Xperia 10 iii could look similar to the predecessor. The triple camera setup of Xperia 10 ii featured a 12MP primary camera, an 8MP telephone camera, and an 8MP ultra-wide camera. For selfies, the handset featured an 8MP front camera with an f/2.0 aperture.
As with all the other Xperia devices, the upcoming smartphones will be IP68 certified to offer water and dust resistance.
2021 set to be a busy year for Sony as it is working on several devices
Besides Xperia 10 iii and Xperia 1 iii, Sony is also working on a budget device that features the Helio P35 chipset, likely to be Xperia L5.
The Xperia 10 ii Plus was in the works and was set to be powered by the Snapdragon 720G SoC until it was canceled. Sony canceled the handset to start working on the mid-range device featuring 5G connectivity that will hit the market as Xperia 10 iii.
It is widely expected that Sony will be launching the Xperia 1 iii, Xperia 10 iii, and Xperia L5 in the first half of 2021 while the Xperia 5 iii flagship could be saved for the second half.
