Is Xiaomi making a foldable phone to compete with Samsung Z Fold series?

Xiaomi’s foldable phone has been codenamed Cetus and may come with 108MP camera with Qualcomm Snapdragon processor

After Samsung came up with its Z Fold series, now Xiaomi may be working on a foldable device that it may launch in early 2021, according to a report by XDA, a mobile software development community. The device has been code named ‘Cetus’ and the foldable capabilities of the upcoming device have been embedded in the MIUI code quite a few times.

“We’ve examined code within MIUI 12’s latest China Closed Beta for the Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro, and found some more clues for the device and some of its specifications. Cetus undoubtedly will be foldable, as the device returns a true value for the method called isFlodAbleDevice (likely a typographical error, intending to mean isFoldAbleDevice),” read the XDA report.

With the increase of popularity of the Samsung Galaxy Z fold and other foldable phones by Motorola, LG and other tech giants have been praised for their foldable technology.

According to the MIUI 12’s latest China Closed Beta, there is a group of other code that hint at how the display monitoring of the foldable device will be and the notable changes in the folding state. The foldable smartphone Cetus by Xiaomi may come with a 108-megapixel primary camera. It is most likely to use the same sensor that’s already being used in the Mi 10 series. Also, Cetus may have two hinges.

Cetus may have a Qualcomm Snapdragon Processor and since it would be a flagship device, there are chances that it would flaunt the powerful chipset Snapdragon 8xx series flagship SoC. Cetus is likely to run on the new Android 11 with MIUI superstructure with 5G connectivity.

Although this isn’t the first-ever foldable smartphone by Xiaomi, as the company had unveiled a foldable device in January 2020. But it has not yet launched and reached the public forum. Also, earlier this year there was news about Xiaomi’s patents over a device with a screen that can be bent and whose design was similar to Huawei Mate Xs, which might be a hint to the end result of Cetus.

Information on the device’s display size, battery or connectivity is still not out yet. Considering the feature and configuration of Cetus, it can most likely be in the premium price range. The upcoming foldable smartphone may be unveiled at the MWC 2021.
